Universal input and output capabilities make the well proven W4100DSP system suitable for all kind of signal monitoring and intelligence. This standalone product gives the user complete freedom of use but standard interfaces allow communication with external devices - from a simple line printer up to a number crunching mainframe computer.

General Description

The development of the W4100DSP Data Decoder and Analyzer is based on long-time experience in three areas: Manual or automatic monitoring of radio data transmissions, radio data intelligence gathering, and the development of radio data reception software. By utilizing the high computational power of its two powerful Digital Signal Processors (DSP), the operational features of the W4100DSP have been substantially enhanced compared to its predecessor, the W4100.

As is the case with other devices produced by WAVECOM importance has been put on designing as simple user operation as possible. A track-ball and easily understood screen menus makes it possible to use the software after a short learning time and without much starting knowledge. The graphics features of the W4100DSP (VGA 640 x 480 pixels) offer ideal conditions for numerous types of graphical display and analysis.

A powerful 16/32 bit TMS34010-50 MHz graphics processor handles data processing and display. In addition this processor with a multitasking operating system kernel controls all control elements and interfaces. The 8 Mbytes program software memory is big enough to contain a great number of concurrent data transmission modes and analysis modes. All graphics processor software has been developed using the industry standard C language.

Two powerful DSP56002-66 MHz DSP's with approximately 65 million instructions per second (MIPS) and 768 Kbytes program and data memory have enough power for any demodulation and decoding mode. The various DSP demodulators have extremely high noise immunity even under adverse reception conditions.

The W4100DSP has many interfaces which may be used for a host of purposes. In addition to three serial interfaces for track-ball, remote control and decoded data output, a Centronics compatible printer may be directly connected. Separate inputs are available for receivers with IF outputs from 12 kHz to 1.5 MHz, 455 kHz, 10.7 MHz and 21.4 MHz. Base band down-conversion is handled by a very stable DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer). All PCM-30 sub channels (G.703, 2.048 Mbit/s) may be selected from any mode. The output of PCM data to the AF output is handled by a 12 bit resolution DAC (Digital/Analog Converter).

Program software for the three processors is loaded using a standard 3 1/2" disk drive making software updating easy. The W4100DSP software is continuously optimized and expanded.

The W4100DSP comes as a 19" rack mount unit with the dimensions 3 HE and 84 U. All connectors are placed on the rear of the housing. Internally the housing is subdivided to separate electronics, power supply and front so that optimal HF shielding is achieved. All connectors are HF decoupled.

For desktop use the W4100DSP 19" rack mount unit may be mounted in most 3 HE desktop cases. Any PC VGA compatible monitor may be used. If the monitor follows the TCO92 and MPR II standards this will guarantee low electromagnetic radiation.

For remote control operation more units may be installed in the same 19" rack. The front indicators give an additional optical control of each system. Also after being installed it is possible to configure the W4100DSP using its front keys. All preset values are maintained during power failures by a backup battery.

Special Functions
The comprehensive software of the W4100DSP allows simple and extensive monitoring of data transmissions. The long-time experience of WAVECOM in the development of software for data transmission on HF and higher frequency bands has also gone into the W4100DSP. Currently the W4100DSP software allows for decoding of more than 70 modes in the HF, VHF, UHF and SHF ranges.

When decoding is started in AUTO mode, the DSP section will automatically adjust itself with high precision to the frequency shift, center frequency, and Baudrate of the monitored transmission. This substantially simplifies data decoding.

The integrated code analysis which is available for most modes searches the incoming bit stream for implemented modes. While having a great number of transmission modes available the W4100DSP remains easy to use. Switching to the detected mode is also done automatically.

In many modes the power of the processors makes it possible to an appreciable reduction in phasing-in time. All FEC and block coding modes have been equipped with the highest possible degree of error correction. Thus the error immunity of the received data in these modes has been appreciably increased. The very precise determination and continuos re-calculation of the Baudrate gives a high degree of immunity against phase loss.

Remote control of all decoding functions is available on the remote control interface of the W4100DSP. In cooperation with shoc, a complete WINDOWS 95™ based software package for the remote control of W4100DSP is available. The combination of a W4100DSP, the shoc RadioManager software/database and a radio receiver produces an ease of operation unknown till now. The remote control commands of the W4100DSP are extensively documented in the manual enabling any customer to tailor his own host computer control software.

The expanded analysis software now makes fast detection and determination of various types of emission available. The new W4100DSP software replaces otherwise necessary additional measuring equipment, e.g. FFT analyzers. The configuration of the analysis software has been optimized to cater for the special requirements of transmissions in the HF and VHF-UHF bands.

A 4096 points resolution real-time FFT with a typical display refreshing rate of 20 images per second makes a real-time bandwidth of 24 kHz available. Several types of FFT signal analysis are available through additional functions like adjustable resolution, cursor measurements, averaging with up to 64 measurements, peak-hold and grid display. The FFT sonogram and waterfall display gives comprehensive analysis facilities, especially in case of multi-tone systems. The color waterfall display includes an amplitude indication enabling measurements over extended periods of time with adjustable acquisition time. BPSK, QPSK and QAM emissions may be analyzed and classified using the I-Q pattern and eye diagram displays.

Utilizing the reliable auto correlation measurement method and FFT makes possible precise Baudrate determination even in case of simplex systems and severely disturbed signals. With the IAS measurement method (iso-asynchronous and synchronous measurement) the Baudrate may be measured with an accuracy of 0.001 Baud. A switchable DSP filter enables shift and Baudrate determination under the most severe signal conditions. Multi-tone modes like TWINPLEX and PICCOLO may be measured and tuned to demodulator center using two graphical cursors with continuos position indication.

The 200,000 bit long periodicity analysis allows the classification of unknown systems, while the graphical display with zoom allows for fast determination of bit or block periods.

A full-screen bit display allows extensive signal and alphabet analysis. A separate data window displays the bit patterns as well as the decoded characters with normal or inverted polarity. Alphabet and cursor bit span is freely selectable. The interleaving may also be freely pre-selected in which case each interleaved bit position is graphically displayed in accordance with the selected interleaving value.

The W4100DSP FSK, 2FSK and 4FSK demodulators with a very high signal-to-noise ratio, the MFSK demodulator with up to 64 tones, and the BPSK, QPSK and QAM demodulators are very well suited for all areas of data analysis and decoding.

Applications
Typical fields of application for the W4100DSP system include:
  • manual or automated
  • PCM30 Satellite Channels
  • signal intelligence
  • signal analysis and classification

Within official bodies and telecommunication authorities the range of applications last from stationary monitoring of one transmission with a single system to fully automated broad band monitoring with a network of cooperating systems. The frequency range covers a spectrum from audio frequencies up to microwaves.

The fully documented remote control possibilities make an integration into almost every user environment very easy. This can be the direct decoding of a single, fixed frequency transmission or the overall signal analysis of a complete network.

Automatic mode recognition makes completely autonomous operation possible. Decoded data can be transferred for being processed by user applications running on additional computers without human interaction. Customer written or third party software can control receivers, recording equipment or the W4100DSP output can be fed into complex data analysis tools which make use of sophisticated functions like the alarm monitor. Additional time stamps generated by the system can be added to the data to ensure precise backtracking of any signal.
