The W41PC MK-II replaces the W41PC ( 01-27-2000)

Major differences:

  • Length of board reduced to 2000mm (7 7/8 in)
  • Reduced power consumption
  • W41PC MK-II hardware has 4 signal inputs now. The EXT-DEM ( EXTernalDEModulator) has been added.
    • The EXT-DEM input must be used if an external demodulator is connected. This input is deigned for FSK type signals only.
    • Note: By using the EXT-DEM input, some modes and functions will be disabled. Therefor, this input should only be used when it is really required.
  • Software:
    • Software version V 5.0.00 or higher can be run on an existing W41PC or on the new W41PC MK-II. Previous versions (up to V 4.4.xx) can only be used on W41PC

Technical Data of EXT-DEM input:

below information on the old W41PC + new W41PC-MK-II

Complete network ability and multiple systems per PC make this personal computer plug-in system the first choice for setting up complex monitoring and surveillance environments. The full support of Windows (tm) 95/98/NT operating systems lets the W41PC easily communicate with other applications. Real DSP technology is combined with today's high PC power.

  new (shorter) W41PC-MKII

General Description
The W41 PC personal computer plug-in system offers all the necessary functions to analyze, decode and process radio communication transmissions. The complete electronic circuitry is realized on a direct plug-in, ISA-Bus printed circuit board.

The W41 PC can be used interactively, via remote control, or using automatic control (customer written or third party software). This allows the plug-in system to be adapted to the clients needs and applications.

Using an audio or IF signal, the W41 PC decodes a variety of text and graphical transmission modes. The detection of signal parameters is assisted by a large number of analysis and measurement functions which operate in a wide range.

Special Functions
To decode and analyze signal transmissions the W41 PC is equipped with two Digital Signal Processors (DSP) and an additional application specific processor unit. The DSP's with their power and efficiency allow the realization of real-time demodulators. The application specific processor manages the processing, and provides a fast and flexible memory port to the PC via the ISA Bus. The W41 PC application runs on the PC, bringing the whole computing power of the PC itself into the system concept.

The W41 PC application software can utilize DCOM to communicate with the W41 PC hardware over the network. Up to four W41 PC systems can be plugged into a single PC based computer, providing basis for a high performance signal decoding system. This combined with the network capabilities allows a system to be
extended to many possible configurations This allows complex system designs for massive data handling. Limitations are given by the performance of the network itself only.

Operation within a network is completely transparent to the user. Configuration of system components can be completely adapted to particular needs. The control of the single W41 PC plug-in system can be done from everywhere on the network and its output directed to one or more devices anywhere on the network.

Any node can be set up as a management console to control a whole network. Even automatic switching of processing in case of partial system shutdowns is possible to keep full operation of the remaining systems. The supervising node or an authorized node can be used to remote control other systems, recording devices or organize direct hard disk recording or archiving to mass storage devices. To realize such configurations high performance networks are recommended.

The W41 PC application is a full 32bit Microsoft Windows (tm) application, and has the benefit of being a familiar operating environment. This also has the advantage of automatically being supported by any graphics and any printer that is Windows™ compliant. Multi window display capabilities make it possible to view different signals or to compare different analysis representations of a single signal simultaneously. The availability of sophisticated development tools allows the rapid implementation of new functions.

A standard operating system allows a quick and direct integration of application interfaces to process data output of the W41 PC according to customer requirements.

The easy-to-use man-machine interface with clearly structured pull down menus allows an operator to be familiar with the W41 PC after a very short time. A high grade of efficiency can very quickly be realized. This highly qualified type of operation needs a quick switching between analysis and decoding modes.

All of the integrated analysis tools contain different measuring methods and viewing possibilities in order to examine the important signal parameters in detail. The W41 PC reaches a unique precision and operates with highest resolutions (e.g. 0.001 baud for Baudrate calculation). Adjustable crosshairs/lines with associated numeric on-line output of their position within different viewing modes make it easy to measure signal parameters exactly. Dynamic zoom functions allow a detailed magnification of any chosen window. Scroll buffering makes it possible to move back and forward within signal history.

Real-time FFT functions realized with high speed Motorola DSPs, together with a fast display refresh rate, provide powerful tools especially suitable for analyzing unknown signals.

A wide range of default system settings can be configured. Some examples are, input signal level, sampling rate, measuring interval, center frequency and complex interleaving factors. Additionally a variety of international alphabets can be selected.

Most of the more than 100 modes currently implemented, all important demodulators and a variety of different alphabets are included in the standard package. Options to decode additional modes are available for authorized official bodies, as is the software source code and a complete development environment. This allows the customer to realize own decoding modes or to adapt the user interface to specific requirements. Product development is an ongoing process, and additional modes and functions are continually being added.

Applications
Typical fields of application for the W41 PC plug-in system include:
  • manual or automated monitoring of radio communication transmissions in the HF and VHF/UHF/SHF bands
  • signal intelligence
  • signal analysis and classification

Within official bodies and telecommunication authorities the range of applications last from stationary monitoring of one transmission with a single system to fully automated broad band monitoring with a network of cooperating systems. The frequency range covers a spectrum from audio frequencies up to microwaves.

The fully documented remote control possibilities make an integration into almost every user environment very easy. This can be the direct decoding of a single, fixed frequency transmission or the overall signal analysis of a complete pager network.

Automatic mode recognition makes completely autonomous operation possible. Decoded data can be routed for being processed by user applications running on the same or another computer in the network without human interaction. With those applications the data output of the W41 PC can control receivers, recording equipment or be fed into complex data analysis tools which make use of sophisticated functions like the alarm monitor. Additional time stamps generated by the system can be added to the data to ensure precise backtracking of any signal.
